Time For Christmas Cake

The Nigella Christmas cookbook is one of my most treasured possessions. Despite the fact that I only open it once a year, despite the fact that it’s easily replaceable, I think it’s one of the items I would save in a fire (I’m assuming my husband will have the rescuing of the baby and cats covered!).

Today I made my Christmas Cake. Nigella has never let me down, the recipe is fool proof and it comes out beautifully everytime. That said, I went on a bit of a wing and prayer this year, topping up with Cointreau when I ran out of brandy, throwing it together in 15 minutes rather than the HOURS I take to mix it bit by bit, and (worst of all) I forgot call in my husband for his Wish Stir – 2016 is quite possibly ruined! On that, are Wish Stirs a thing? My mother always used to get my brother and I to stir the Christmas Cake batter and make a wish. The first year I got B to do it he looked at me like I’d lost my mind!

If you aren’t blessed with Nigella Christmas, you can get a lot of the recipes here. I highly recommend the Rocky Road – Christmas isn’t quite complete without it!

The Handmade Christmas Company

This year will be my daughter’s first Christmas. Her Dad and I decided that we probably wouldn’t really get her anything because a) we’re constantly spoiling her anyway -she only needs to throw a smile in the direction of a stuffed animal and we’re at the checkout! and b) her grandparents are going to go absolutely nuts!

So of course I’ve bought a few bits. “Just enough to fill a stocking” I reasoned to my husband. A few books, a couple of items of clothing, a new Lamaze toy, some festive jimjams….  And suddenly before I knew it, I have too much to fit in a stocking!

I remember from my own childhood, the excitement of hanging my very own (very gaudy) personalised stocking up ready for Santa’s arrival. It was so exciting to think he must have known exactly who I was to put presents in a stocking with my name on. So, with that in mind I have ordered a personalised sack for us to roll out every year.

I went for this one from The Handmade Christmas Company. I liked that I could pick the font and text colour

There’s currently an offer on where you can pick one up for £10 by using the promo code FACEBOOK.

Let’s hope she’s well behaved every year so it gets filled up!

All I Want For Christmas….

Christmas decorations are up in the shops, the John Lewis advert has reduced us all to tears, and it’s time to start buying the gifts.
Every year I’m asked what I would like, and every year I haven’t the faintest idea. Well this year, I’m ready for it.

Dear Santa – if you would be so kind, I would be delighted to receive any of the following:
Miranda Berrow Tea Cups

In any colour aren’t these beauties just lovely? I can just picture curling up with a good book and a cup of tea.

Fly Away Home by Marina Warner

Speaking of good books – I heard the author talking about this book on Radio 4 and was immediately intrigued. I’ve always been a massive fan of fairy tales, and whilst I’m looking forward to reading the fluffy, nice versions to my daughter, I have a huge fascination with the original, dark stories. In this book Marina Warner takes a series of myths, fairy tales and folklore and give then a modern twist with uptodate props and current themselves. Sounds marvellous!
LSA Aurelia Champage Flutes

I actually received a set of these from my in-laws a couple of Christmases ago. And I absolutely love them. Following the refurbishment of our kitchen, I’m planning lots of fabulous parties and no party is truly fabulous without champagne!

Hush Silk Shirt

I love a silk shirt. Throwing one on with jeans, I feel instantly less Frazzeled Caregiver and far more Yummy Mummy . This one from Hush comes in ecru or black and is a wardrobe staple. It’s too pricey for a gift though so vouchers towards it would be lovely.

Vika Sky Salad Set

How much easier would it be to stick to that ‘salads only’ New Years Resolution with these little gems. I do a lot of Big Bowl cooking where it’s all thrown together and we just serve ourselves. These would be much nicer to use that my half melted kitchen spoon!

Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Cologne

I’ve been after buying myself this forever. But I always feel it’s an indulgence too far (it’s not my signature scent).  I adore the smell of all Jo Malone colognes but when they brought this one out I fell a little bit in love.
So that’s what I’m asking for when I perch on Sant’s lap this year. What about you?
